Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was ordained a Unitarian minister in 1829. He served the Second Church in Boston from 1829 to 1832 before launching his career as an essayist and public speaker. His famous sermon to the graduating class of Harvard Divinity School in 1838 inspired a generation of Transcendentalists to push Unitarianism beyond the denomination's early biblical emphasis.
