Unitarians and Universalists have had a presence in the nation’s capital since the 1820s. The Rev. Bruce T. Marshall, a UU minister and author of four books, tells their story using more than 200 archival images.
How Risky Is It, Really? Why Our Fears Don’t Always Match the Facts. David Ropeik. McGraw Hill, 2010; $24.95. Looks at ways we perceive risk and how we are influenced by such factors as media portrayals and group pressure. A member of First Parish in Concord, Mass., Ropeik is a consultant and speaker on risk perception and risk communication.
Women Healing Women: A Model of Hope for Oppressed Women Everywhere. William Keepin and Cynthia Brix. Hohm Press, 2009; $19.95. Tells the story of a shelter for battered women and children founded in India in 1997. Cynthia Brix is a member of the UU Congregation of Whidbey Island, in Freeland, Wash., and a candidate for the UU ministry.
The Tao of Tarot: ‘The Way’ to Health, Happiness and Spiritual Illumination Through Qigong Dreaming. Christina Bjergo. O Books, 2010; $24.95. The author is a member of the UU Church of Vancouver, Wash.
Walking to New Orleans: Ethics and the Concept of Participatory Design in Post-Disaster Reconstruction. Robert R. N. Ross and Deanne E. B. Ross. Wipf & Stock, 2008; $59. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, looks at how ideas about the relationship between the human and natural worlds have informed many environmental and engineering dilemmas and contributed to the history of social injustice. The Rev. Robert R. N. Ross is interim minister of All Souls UU Church in Braintree, Mass.
Hester: The Missing Years of ‘The Scarlet Letter.’ Paula Reed. St. Martin’s Press, 2010; $24.99. This novel depicts Hester Prynne’s life after she leaves New England for England, where she becomes entangled in a web of political intrigue, espionage, and romance. Reed is a member of Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, Colo.
