My Ostraka: History I. © 2001 by Cynthia Kukla. lxxvi (left), sumi ink and watercolor, 26 x 40 inches and lxix, mixed media, 26 x 40 inches.

Cynthia Kukla painted these works the week of September 11, 2001. She had been drawn for some time, she says, “to an archaic terra cotta portrait head of Athena, born of Zeus, the most powerful, and Metis, the most wise. Athena is the goddess presiding over the state, meaning she is the goddess of war. Yet she also presided over the intellectual and moral side of human life.”
